Rambu Solo is an elaborate, multi-day funeral ceremony in Tana Toraja, Sulawesi, that serves as a vibrant celebration of life, often taking place months or years after death, as families save for the expense. It is central to Torajan culture, where the deceased is considered “sleeping” and stays with the family, treated with daily care until the ceremony transitions them to the afterlife.

Hanging coffins are an ancient funeral custom where wooden coffins are placed on cliff faces, in caves or suspended from overhangs. Prominently practiced by the Igorot people in Sagada, Philippines, and historically by the Bo people in China, this practice brings the dead closer to heaven, protects bodies from animals and looters, and honors ancestors
